Quick one for the Baja crew, and there's a fish worth talking about.

Pancho had a guy out on one of the 23 pangas this week working a live barrilete slow over the banks. Ate it, ninety minutes later they had a 192 pound yellowfin aboard. On a panga, standing up the whole time. Anybody who's fought a real tuna off one of these boats knows exactly what that means. Weighed it on the crane scale at the dock.

Tuna's excellent right now across the board, 20 pounders up past 200.

Two programs. Schoolies come on the sardine chum line, steady flow, bring them up behind the boat and feed a hooked sardine into the slick with no drag. Easy, consistent fishing. Big grade is live barrilete slow trolled, knot and a half to two and a half, and that's the patience play on heavy stand-up gear, 80 to 130 class, 50W or 80W two speed, 100 to 130 to a 200 to 300 leader, 9/0 to 11/0, harness on.

Everything else is quiet and worth saying plainly. Dorado slow, marlin slow, wahoo slow. Keep a rod rigged but nobody's building a day around them this week.

Full moon tonight, the Harvest Moon, so spring tides and the hardest current push of the month. Bait's tight, tuna are on it. Early run is the window like always.

Wind's the planning factor. Today 9 to 19, Monday 15 to 27, Tuesday's the bad one at 17 to 30, then Wednesday drops to 7 to 19 and Thursday, October 1, is 6 to 18. Everybody down here knows how those windy days feel in a smaller boat, so pick your day.

And October's a week out. Doesn't need much explaining to this crowd, it's the best month of the year here. Dorado, marlin and wahoo come back while the tuna stay, which is exactly why October is also tournament season on this coast. Boats book out, so if you've got people coming down, sort it now.
