Re: Introduction

Seem to recall jerk & swim baits were your forte, no baits ? Does your dad still get out with you occasionally? The only time I use bait is when I shark fish, which is very seldom these days. My father will be 98 in Sept, his sand days are over do to balance problems. But I take him to the pier...

North County Surf Report 5/26

Happy Memorial Day friends! Perch fishing was great yesterday, my buddy and I caught 10+ perch each within an hour. They were about 10-12 inches. We also went to Oceanside pier and caught 8 Mackerel that we plan to use today for leopard sharks! Water clarity has improved a ton and water temps are sl...

Re: Rocky Shorelines - Calico Bass May 22

This was really helpful, thanks for the info on how all that eel grass washes up this time of year. Did your weedless rig in the photos manage to cut through it pretty well (besides the obvious success), or do you just move around until you find a relatively clean patch? The main reason I use this ...

SD Bay report 5/28

Difficult to get bait, but my dad and I did manage to catch some in the morning and afternoon. The bite was really good yesterday with plenty of bites throughout the day. I broke off on a few fish, one of which felt like a decent ray or guitarfish. I also missed a few bites and pulled the hook on a ...

Nice catch @Nick Arevalo! What type of bait were you guys using?

Sometimes pictures post sideways, especially when uploaded from an iPhone.

Re: Fishy Trips Potential Next Week?

Just got off the Mission Belle. Landed 4 between 25 and a touch over 30, all fly line baits. 3 on the 70 year old jigstick and one on the 60 year old trueline. Tight lines and following seas my friends...

Tuna Tips Early July 2023

Hi, and welcome. Wanted to share so you can benefit from the errors of my ways on a recent 2-day trip on the Pacifica, a boat I very much enjoyed. The tuna caught were mostly schoolies in the 25-pound range with a few north of 70lbs. We finished with something like 79 BFT and 21 YFT. 1. Fish LIGHT. ...

Re: Tuna Tips Early July 2023

I got 5 bluefin and 1 yellowfin on the San Diego july 4th. Fishing 40# flouro, #1 owner j hook, 100 feet or so of 40# mono on top of 65# braid. Drag set on strike with a 10lb dumbbell … they barely even pulled drag. Fresh bait was the key like others said. They bit 40 lb just as good as anything els...

Torrey Pines Skunk-Away

Been fishing since May. First two weeks I went every day to Torrey. Skunked. Since then,I have caught close to 100 fish at my favorite beach. Occasionally would come back to TP to try again... skunk. The other day finally caught my first fish... three small corbina which were released. Lots of kids ...

The biggest fish I caught from the surf was from North Torrey Pines right in front of the parking lot.

Re: Torrey Pines Skunk-Away

That's the TP Paradox. Sometimes the fish are right where the people are. And sometimes you hike up the beach to find so many weeds that you can't fish.... What's right between the parking lots at TP? the widest, flattest section of beach for miles. And people, too. Corbina in particular don't seem ...

TP 7/23/23 AM session

lots of quality sand crabs today and water seemed plenty warm but not many bites. Got a couple guitar fish, a perch and a bean. There's so many rocks on beach lately, don't remember seeing that many in past years, not sure if that messes with bites. Might try my hand at north tp next time, the south...

short sunset trip 7/27

got to the beach a bit layer than i’d like, about 7:40. Water is still warm, which is great. There was a metric fk ton of seaweed on the beach and in the water which, of course, smelled awful. if we could get the bait through the seaweed, the fish bit very quickly. every time we hit a section that d...

Kelp Paddy Dorado & Yellowtail 8/4/2023

Late report from yesterday... Me and the broski picked up 1/2 scoop of quality bait that was well worth the line, had two double hookups just south of 302. Then farmed a couple of open water dorado, and landed a yellowtail that made multiple runs into the paddy. They bit 15-25# flytline and the slow...

8/5 & 8/6 north county

Salad was ungodly, yet again. Went around low tide 7-8 pm. Water temp is still wonderful, but with that comes a bunch of swimmers/surfers and, recently at least, snorkelers. Anyway, fishing was pretty good. In those about 1.5 hours each day for those 2 days, we got 3 croaker, 1 sargo, a couple short...

Big ones!

Went out on the Old Glory and it was super fun...we went all the way to Tanner on an overnight boat (big thanks to the Captain). Got there about an hour after first light and there were 30+ boats there already on anchor. we did the same and in short order I hooked (and subsequently landed) a BFT. 20...
