San Vicente Lake Record Redear 4.2 lbs Released

I got super lucky this afternoon at San V. After catching a bunch of bass on dropshots, I decided to target a few panfish laate in the day based on my meter readings and WHAMO, blessed with a tanker panfish, a 4.2 lb. redear.

She was caught on 2 lb line and a piece of nightcrawler, 18 feet deep on a 6-foot ultralight rod and I have never seen the drag burn off like that. Very lucky to get this fish to the boat! Officially weighed and recorded by the lake staff on the lake's digital scale before being released at the launch ramp.

Here are some photos, the GIRTH was just incredible. Lucky Lucky Lucky

This breaks the San V record by 1/2 POUND, a record set back in 2002 at 3.7 lbs, shown below from SDFish site

[mod], that is a [mod] monster. Unfortunately it probably died but damn! You weren't fishing for bass with a 2lb setup on hand.

That's a monster for sure, there was also a 4lb redear caught at DVL this week.

Those quagga mussels are mighty tasty to a redear. Redears are growing like crazy elsewhere too.

That’s awesome! I can’t believe it took 21 years for someone to break the record. Look at that belly full of eggs. I’m sure the quaggas play a key roll for these fish to grow as big as they do.

OK, but I caught eight bass, and one panfish. Yes its possible that she swam off strong and then died. The stringer is through the lip, not the gills and nothing ever touched her gills. Only held her using wet hands and held by the lip briefly for photos. With the park rangers, I shot the release video of her racing away, its public if you have Facebook here:

I'm honored, as you are truly the panfish master! Your experience, knowledge and information sharing over the years is inspirational to many in the panfish community.

I hope that we'll all be surprised at the size of fish caught this year, and, in the next three years!

Thanks for saying that. It means a lot to me. After a lifetime of always being the guy who never gets sick, it has been one thing after another since I turned eighty. I now find myself with some serious health issues, but it is still my intention to get back out there.

That's so rare, given the ultra lite. It's like hitting a grand slam , pinch hitting in the world series. You are a master angler for sure.
Wow!!!!

@professionull this slab may certainly call for some emotional language ;) but kids can be reading this so please keep it a bit more family friendly.

Roy, you are the original master worm-drifter of San Vicente for stacks and stacks of bluegill, and many crappie I remember. I have learned a TON from you sir! Thanks for all of your help over the last couple decades.
