San V 3/30 Father/ son outing
My son came into town for the Easter weekend so we headed out into a rainy morning to see what we could find. Only three boats out there that I know of.
Headed to the scene of the crime of my last trip, Barona of course. Started the day out with a solid 3.7 on my third cast with a Senko. Picked up another solid one on a chatterbait about 5min later.
My son started out throwing top water and had several blowups in the first 10-15min before connecting with a chunky one. After a few more missed strikes on top, most were smaller fish, I had him throw an Ika and that worked out well for him, landing 5 on it.
The wind kicked up and the rain started coming in sideways so we called it early and we’re back at the dock by 11. Thirteen fish between us. I beat him 7-6, and for big fish. He beat me in weight for our best 5.
Always a great day when I can get on the water with my son. Even better when he catches fish!!

Re: San V 3/30 Father/ son outing
It’s really only the last couple of years I have started throwing top water early in the year. I usually bust it out in Feb sometime depending on when I finally start getting fish shallower. I have been surprised more than once, thinking I would fish it for a little bit just to keep the fish honest and end up getting fish on it. I will say that a walking bait, spook, frog, Sammy etc. get me most of the bites I get early in the year. Once they start bedding a prop bait or a popper become my go to baits on top. I know a lot of guys who throw a buzz bait early, I just haven’t had much luck with it.
Absolutely LOVE the Ika for fishing a little deeper than the Senko. Yesterday I had him pitch into any current we found and just let the bait roll along the bottom with the flow.

Nice report. Always happy to see the bone Zara Spook work. Especially in a monsoon. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.png)
