The Far One 4/27

Post by risentidefishing »

Hit the road at 6:30am and made the 1hr 20 minute trek from Oceanside to the most remote lake in San Diego County. Got my boat all dried up the night before but arrived to find out my cooler had tilted over and spilled all the melted ice into the boat đŸ˜© Spent 20 mins getting that all dried up and luckily passed the quagga inspection and got on the lake around 9am. Haven’t fished the lake in 10+ years so didn’t really know what to expect. Water temp was 63 in the morning and up to 68 degrees by the time we left. Started running some bank east of Pumphouse cove and got our first bite around 10:15 on a 6” Magdraft freestyle and it was a good one! Chunky 6.5lber for my buddy Sam. Fish hit the swimbait flipped up shallow where a rock pile met some sticks, 3-5ft of water. We doubled down on the weedless swimbaits and ended up putting 2 more nice fish in the 2-4lb range in the boat. Lost another 5+lber when I stupidly tried to boat flip it on 14lb test and snapped off at the lure! Wasn’t going to make that mistake again and went to straight braid for the rest of the day.

Hit a little lull mid day and went looking for carp but didn’t find enough shallow to keep our interest so back to bass we went. Switched over to a flipping setup and started running some bank along the NW side of the lake. From 1-2pm we got on a heater and landed 7 more REALLY healthy bass. Everything we caught were scrappy 3.5-5lbers, topped off with my biggest bass in 2 years at just a hair over 7lbs! Green pumpkin/blue creature baits flipped shallow on the shady side of rocks with sticks around was the pattern. Again in that 3-5ft range. Super fun hour of fishing and we were pinching ourselves to have the whole lake to ourselves! We ground it out until 5:30 but never got on another good bite and only landed 1 more small bass. Ended up with 12 bass with our best 5 going well over 25lbs. Super fun day at the “Far One”!

Edit: Anybody know how to make the images right side up? Still learning the new site

That far lake thought the years can be very tough to fish especially when the water was so low unless you like to fish for carp. But just about every April and sometimes early May(depending on the weather) there is a period where some very nice fat healthy bass are caught. It is kept pretty quiet, but guys who know about it have chances of having an awesome day out there. I have a buddy who keeps it pretty quiet each year, but I have seen pics of some fat bass he has caught over the years. He said It is a hit or miss but you guys nailed them. Wow, what an awesome time you guys must of had. The video was exciting to watch, great pics and great job out there. Thank for sharing.

Nice. You put me to shame.looks like you had some killer conditions. We had sheep on the ranch for most of the whole day. (White caps)

Reminds me of the old days out there when there was alot more water! Miss those days! Hopefully they won't drain it all down stream!

I think they just rely on the severe leak in the dam to drain haha. There is a whole lot of new water out there. Almost double in acreage from where it’s been

Really good day of fishing. Risk was definitely worth the reward!
