Cap float 5/12

Post by CorsoEnthusiast »

Took the tubes out to Cap this morning. Mother’s Day had the lake pretty empty early! Only a couple of boat trailers and my brother and I in the tubes.

Immediately started throwing my favorite bladed bait around shallow brush. Got the most action where there was brush in the back of cuts and coves. First hour was crazy. I had a limit within 35 minutes and that pace kept up for the first hour or so. After that things died off. Threw dropshot, Neko, jig etc and only managed to tack on one more. Seems like the bite is early down there right now. No quality today, all fish were between 10-14”.

Favorite bladed bait got destroyed today - wire is toast from so many catches. Guess it’s time to get a new one..

Spinnerbait fish are a lot of fun.
My favorite spinnerbaits normally get replaced when the wire breaks at the line tie and all I get back are the blades=)

For a time there I really liked the Terminator baits, but I have even had those break, but rarely.

Way to get out there!

These are pretty light wire too admittedly, it’s a JDM spinnerbait from BottomUp. I have been careful not to tubeflip fish with these but that bait took a beating today. That bait has logged me a lot of catches since February this year. It’ll get retired now. These come over from Japan just a few times a year so I need to remember to stock up next time they’re in. One of those baits that just has the mojo for me. Just gets bit.

Light wire spinnerbaits to me always seem to put out more vibration, but don't hold up to the abuse as long. I will sacrifice the baits longevity if it gets more bites. Totally agree with you as I am a fan of light wire too.

Some shore fun. Got a new dropshot rod so I respooled, threw my terminal and some plastics in a small pack and grabbed a water bottle and headed down.. not like I needed an excuse to go or anything lol.

Got there about 5pm, hiked down further toward the Dam than usual. About 545 I got 3 in 5 casts. Thinking that was gonna be a good omen for the last hour and a half but didn’t get a sniff after that. Rangers chased me off (it was pretty empty, not many trailers in the lot and nobody else shore fishing in my preferred area) with at least 30 minutes till sunset, kind of frustrating. But, if my objective was to test out the new rod, this trip was a success. Don’t know what happened to the quality though. Month ago it seemed like every fish in the lake was 2-2.5lbs. Haven’t seen anything bigger than high 1lb range down there in a minute.

The bigger post-spawn females are normally resting offshore in May, they'll be back!
